6 Ways to Improve Your Bathroom on a Budget

If you take a look at the more popular bathroom photos on Pinterest, Instagram, or in magazines, they usually have a few things in common. They each have most if not all of the 6 simple improvements I’ve listed below.

To easily update your space before going all in on a bathroom renovation or remodel, try incorporating some (or all) of these updates. I promise you will love your bathroom more!

Add a Plant

Sometimes what your bathroom is missing is just a little bit of life.

Plants add colour and help to purify the air. Use an interesting planter to add colour and texture to your space.

Planters are also a nice way to infuse your personal style. Check out your nearest plant shop, they will likely have planters made by local artists! There are some amazing garden centres all throughout Dufferin County.

Make sure you consider the amount of natural light your bathroom gets when choosing your plant. If you don’t have any natural light, then consider an artificial plant. If you have a shower in your bathroom, consider a plant that can stand high moisture.

Cutting a small branch from a plant in your yard is also a quick way to add greenery. Not only does this add some life into your space, but it is a great conversation piece. And so easy!

Use Containers

Use small glass jars to hold your everyday essential items like cotton swabs/balls and to personalize your space.

The boxes they come in aren’t always very aesthetically pleasing (looking at you Q-Tip box). Chances are you have unused mason jars around your house, these are a great alternative to house your cotton swabs and cotton balls – plus they look sweet on your countertop.

Thrift stores are a great place to find small glass jars to hold your most used items as well.

Change up your Hand Towels

New hand towels can give your bathroom a spa-like feel.

If your hand towels are torn, worn out, or have lost their colour, it’s probably time for a change.

You can find many amazing hand towel options for under $20. Check out your local home shop first, they always have beautiful products (Orangeville has some great options!). If you’re stumped many shops sell affordable hand towels (think IKEA, CB2, HomeSense, etc.) or perhaps give Etsy a try!

Be sure to check with your local SPCA or wildlife rescue centre before getting rid of your towels, they often take old towel donations.

Try a Fresh Coat of Paint

If you have been thinking about painting your bathroom for a while, just go for it!

Bathrooms are a great place to take a risk with a bold paint colour.

Paint helps to brighten your space up and is an inexpensive way to change the look of your bathroom.

Plus, if you grow out of the colour in a year it is an easy fix!

Why wait weeks, months, or years for your full bathroom renovation when you could make your space more enjoyable right now?

Add Art

Adding a piece of art that you love and would be happy to look at daily is a great way to improve your bathroom.

This does not have to be an expensive project. Check your local thrift store – they usually have tons of old paintings and prints. Then, easily swap out the photo inside with a photo from a past trip, a print, or artwork you or a family member has made.

You can also find inexpensive frames at Michael’s, IKEA, or try your local art store.

This is a great way to add some personality into your bathroom and to try to incorporate meaningful art vs. store-bought mass produced prints.

Change your Soap Dispenser

It may seem silly, but having items that are intentional on your countertop will really make your space feel more special.

To do this easy fix, simply buy soap in bulk or from your favourite zero waste store and refill a single soap dispenser. You can also choose your soap based on its packaging and then just refill it afterwards!

Not only does this save you tons of wasted plastic but it also allows you to add more cohesion to the style of your bathroom.

If you’re a bar of soap kind of person, try placing your bar on a nice dish.

Check for these items at your local home store, if you can. Otherwise, any big box store like IKEA, Walmart, or HomeSense will have many options for you to choose from.
